Hating Kai

Over the years I've noticed many fans hating on Kai for one reason or another. It seems Z is preferred over Kai.

Why is this?

I've wanted to rewatch the series for a while now, and for me, I think Kai is the only option. Z just looked incredibly dated to me after seeing anime like FMAB, and I don't think I could enjoy the original series much anymore.

I'm sure other people have that same problem, y'know, the art looking really dated. Kai fixes that problem though, and I'm sure Kai has far better lip syncing too.

So why would people hate on it if it's everything Z was, but better?

The "hate" generally stems from nostalgia.

...but I don't see how Kai "fixes" the art looking dated? It actually does the opposite for me... especially when it has the random, jarringly different (not necessarily superior) quality, redrawn scenes.

I don't hate Kai. But if I wanted manga accuracy I'd read the manga. Kai is just a watered down version of my favorite show which is why I prefer the original.

The art looks far more dated in Z, is what I meant. Kai looks better.

And what I was saying was... it's the same art, so what are you talking about?

They threw in a few random "HD" (hah) additions that probably hurt more than help... but other than that it's the same film roll as the original.

Kai looked more visually pleasing. It looks a lot cleaner and sharper than Z too.

While Kai gets rid of a bunch of hokey filler, it also takes away a bunch of actual character development/screen time. The fights feel a little bit neutered and short too. The Nappa fight is missing so many great moments from the orginial anime. Vegeta vs Zarbon round 1 was a used to be a real fight for survival. It was Vegeta putting absolutely everything on the line to power through one fight. In Kai it's over in two seconds. And etc.

The original adaptation sprinkled a lot of epicness to the fights

Everyone seems to be about the art, graphics, quality, etc. I may be the only one who prefers the old gritty quality and picture.

I prefer Kai over Z, mostly because it removes filler (which I hated the most about Z) and it's more accurate to the manga.

I don't care about the animation either way(it's better than the crappy animation used in BOG and the other new stuff), but the lack of filler is really quite good as is the voice acting. Freeza is the best improvement

People dislike it for various reasons, most of them being superficial ones brought froth by Nostalgia. You'll often hear people say the following:
"What? No Faulconer music? This is sux!"
"Ugh what did they do to the voices? Gohan sounds like a little girl and Freeza sounds dumb(the irony)".
"The dialogue is too adult, Goku wouldn't say bastard or dammit."
"There isn't any blood!"(Some people don't seem to know there are uncut versions of the episodes)
Now people do have legitimate reasons for disliking or just kinda being indifferent to it. I for one think Kai is a bit too choppy when it comes to the fight scenes. It's often very distracting, and I get sucked out of the moment sometimes. There's also the problem with the music. Yamamoto had a great thing going, but it turned out he was plagiarizing sh**, so his music had to go. It was then replaced with Kikuchi, which is fine, but it makes Kai feel incomplete, and if you've been keeping up with the Majin Buu arc of Kai, you'll find that the music is a bit off sometimes, if not outright terrible:

Seriously, what is that sh**?
Beyond all this, I do think Kai is worth watching.... in English. Funimation's dub of Kai is faaaaaaaaaar better than their original take on Z. The writing is far superior, and the voice acting has improved greatly. Both the Japanese version and English dub suffer for the reasons I have already mentioned, but the Japanese version has no improvements over Z other than the better pacing. The voice actors are clearly past their primes, and this is made clear with Vegeta's delivery in Kai. So in the end, if you're looking to watch Dragon Ball Z in english, Kai is your best bet. If you're a bigger fan of the show in Japanese, I simply recommend you watch the original Z.

"The dialogue is too adult, Goku wouldn't say bastard or dammit."
I've actually seen people say the opposite of that, that there isn't enough adult language, because they've only seen the edited version and don't understand the concept of an edited version, at least for Kai.

Yeah though, it's pretty much always nostalgia that makes people hate it.

Having a complaint about it that keeps you from watching isn't really hate, in my opinion.

Here's what disappointed me about Kai, it was still Z. Granted it was manga accurate, but I was expecting something new. Especially since they worked so hard on those Dragonball Heroes OAVs. Now why isn't THAT a show?

They never indicated it was going to be something new, did they? Why set yourself up for disappointment?

When I'm watching dbz in English, I usually watch the original. The music is better and gohan's voice is better. I personally don't like kai as much for those reasons. I don't understand why anyone would want them to take out Bruce faulconer's music in favor of kais music. Kai music is boring IMO. I don't think it's nostalgia making me like Bruce faulconer's music more either. I just don't like kai music. Same with gohan's voice

If I'm watching the show in Japanese, I always go with kai
